The United States Conscription Act Of 1863, Official And Complete (William H. Fisk: Manchester, N.H., [probably 1863, though misdated 1862 on last page of text, apparently a typographical error] )

3.25 x 5.5 inches, 16 pages. Soft bound in original printed wrapper. Front and rear wrappers chipped and creased, with no loss of text; front wrapper nearly detached, with soil spot on front and adhesive label on blank rear; period pencil writing on first page of text; some creasing and soil to text pages; in only fair condition overall, BUT a complete copy of a fragile imprint.

Includes the provision which allowed well-to-do men to provide a “substitute “ to fulfill their military obligation- in other words, to by their way out of Army service.

This and other aspects of the draft law resulted in violent protest- (The Draft Riots) and Copperhead sentiment-in New York and other northern cities.
